Honoring a Hero. Building a Legacy.
When U.S. Marine Captain Jeff Kuss tragically lost his life during a 2016 Blue Angels training flight, the town of Smyrna sought to honor his service, sacrifice, and spirit with a memorial worthy of his legacy. Romach General Contractors was proud to lead the construction of the Captain Jeff Kuss USMC Memorial, a lasting tribute to one of Tennessee’s own heroes.
Project Overview
Client: Town of Smyrna
Location: Lee Victory Park, Smyrna, TN
Completion: 2018
Project Type: Public Memorial / Civic Landmark
Scope: Structural foundation, monument construction, site preparation, lighting, and landscape coordination
Architect: Kline Swinney Associates
The centerpiece of the memorial is a retired F/A-18C Hornet jet, displayed as if in flight. Romach’s team was responsible for design coordination, foundation work, and precision installation of the monument to ensure both safety and striking visual impact. The project required careful planning, collaboration with engineers, and coordination with the U.S. Navy to handle the aircraft’s placement.
Beyond the aircraft installation, the project included memorial walkways, lighting, and visitor spaces that invite reflection and remembrance. Romach worked closely with local officials, veterans’ organizations, and community donors to bring the vision to life—balancing engineering excellence with a deep respect for the memorial’s purpose.
